Persecution of the Baha'i
Shown here is the Iranian government destroying a Baha'i holy site in Iran's ongoing persecution of the Baha'i faith.
Since the start of the religion in the 1860's, Bahia’s have faced constant persecution in Iran. In the 1800's alone, over 20,000 Baha'i followers were killed for their beliefs by the Iranian army. Islam's have viewed this rising new religion as "heresy" and a direct threat to their way of life. Since then, the Baha'i have been living in specifically designated parts of Iran and are still victims and often used as scapegoats by the Iranian government. Baha'i worshippers in Iran
face crippling laws. For instance, Baha'i marriages were no longer recognized, as well as the government firing many Baha'i social workers.
The Baha'i's response hasn't ever included violence. The Baha'i believe that they are destined to face persecution due to the fact that they are a recent religion and will be compelled to face hatred that ensues from the confusion when a new religion forms from a former. The Baha'i community points out the fact that all current major religions have faced persecution in their roots. (4)
